Introduction

Matthew 22:36-40 talks about the greatest commandment/s in the bible, which is/are: 1. To love God, and 1b. To love your neighbor as yourself. Loving God means obedience to his commandments as written in 1 John 5:3. Loving God means choosing to do the will of God instead of your own will. Why? because this not only shows that you love God, but also your neighbors and yourself. In this post we look at how to choose the will of God.

Step 1: Mental Transformation

‘And do not be conformed to this world [any longer with its superficial values and customs], but be transformed and progressively changed [as you mature spiritually] by the renewing of your mind [focusing on godly values and ethical attitudes], so that you may prove [for yourselves] what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His plan and purpose for you]. ‘ -Romans 12:2

In order to be able to choose the will of God, the first step will be mental tranformation. The word of God is the key to your mental transformation. Meditating on the word of God in order to be mentally transformed, which will lead to obedience, is the only way we show God we love him. It won’t be possible to do the will of God if you are not mentally transformed through the word. Renewal and transformation of old mindsets of this world to the will of God is the foundation of choosing the will of God.

Step 2: Fasting, Prayer and Worship

Choosing the wil of God can be very challenging. Especially, when you know the will of God, but still can’t seem to choose it. When you find yourself in this category, you need the strength of the Holy Spirit. It may be that your spirit is weak. In order to gain strength: fasting, prayer and worship is needed. Focusing on strengthening your spirit is the key to choosing the will of God. It will be impossible to choose the will of God without the Holy Spirit. Which leads me to the last step…

Step 3: Following The Holy Spirit

The last step to choosing the will of God will be following the Holy Spirit. When you are mentally transformed through the renewal of your mind based on the word, meaning you know the will of God. Then, you strenghten yourself through fasting, prayer and worship. And lastly, you follow the Holy spirit through word based instructions personalized to your relationship with God, fulfillment of your purpose, and physical and mental self-care (GPS). If you follow all these steps, you will inevitably choose the will of God for your life.
