How To Choose The Will Of God

“Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses. Now I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life, so that you and your descendants might live!” – Deuteronomy 30:19

Introduction

When Jesus was asked about the greatest commandment, He answered with two foundational truths found in Matthew 22:36-40:

  1. Love God with all your heart, soul, and mind.
  2. Love your neighbor as yourself.

To truly love God is to obey His commandments (1 John 5:3). This kind of love requires choosing God’s will over our own. Why? Because this choice not only demonstrates our love for Him but also reflects love for others and even ourselves. Let us explore how to align our lives with God’s will and walk in the fullness of His purpose.

Step 1: Transform Your Mind

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.”Romans 12:2

Choosing God’s will begins with a mental transformation. The key to this transformation lies in meditating on and applying God’s Word. By doing so, our minds are renewed, shifting from worldly values to godly principles. This renewal is foundational. Without it, our ability to discern and obey God’s will is compromised. Transformation is a journey—a progressive change that empowers us to walk in alignment with God’s good, pleasing, and perfect plan.

Step 2: Strengthen Your Spirit through Fasting, Prayer, and Worship

At times, choosing God’s will can feel overwhelming. You may know what God desires but struggle to act on it. This is often a sign of spiritual weakness. To overcome, we must turn to the Holy Spirit for strength.

Fasting, prayer, and worship are powerful tools for spiritual fortification. Fasting helps us deny our flesh and focus on God. Prayer connects us to His heart and aligns us with His purpose. Worship centers our lives on His glory. Together, these practices nourish and empower our spirit, enabling us to choose God’s will even in the face of challenges.

Step 3: Follow the Holy Spirit

The final step in choosing God’s will is to follow the Holy Spirit. Once your mind is transformed by God’s Word and your spirit is strengthened, the Holy Spirit becomes your guide. He provides personalized instructions tailored to your unique relationship with God, your life’s purpose, and your well-being.

The Holy Spirit acts as your divine GPS, leading you in truth, helping you make decisions that align with God’s plan, and sustaining you in every season. As you listen to His guidance and trust His leading, you will find yourself consistently choosing the will of God.

Conclusion

Choosing the will of God is not a single act but a daily commitment. It requires a transformed mind, a strengthened spirit, and a surrendered heart guided by the Holy Spirit. By following these steps, you will walk in obedience, love, and purpose—experiencing the abundant life God has prepared for you and your descendants. Choose life. Choose God’s will. The blessings will follow.
